Plastic bags on trial
The Horten department store in Neuss / Germany started distributing the first plastic bags 50 years ago. It is an anniversary that no-one is celebrating, although it may perhaps be the last chance to do so: following the ban on light bulbs, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) carrier bags are in danger of being prohibited too. To get plastic waste under control, EU Commissioner for the Environment, Janez Poto?nik, Slovenia, is considering making the bags illegal. As an alternative, discussions are being held about making them considerably more expensive or imposing a special tax on them, in order to create an incentive to reuse them and thus to cut consumption. Nothing has been decided yet. Although the majority of the citizens of the EU are in favour of a ban, as an online survey initiated by the EU Commission has revealed, it is unlikely to be introduced, because an unbiassed life cycle analysis of plastic bags shows that they are better than alternatives that are sometimes talked up rashly.
